On highways all over the world today, there are numerous types of trailers. But no matter what kind of trailers are placed behind a vehicle if, for a few weeks or more, it has been stored or parked, it is essential that it be made road ready before any trip. This inspection checklist for trailers should be a vital part of any trailer pulling plan, be it business, pleasure, or otherwise.

Inspecting the Trailer

  • Make sure the electrical system is plugged in and check the turn signals, brake lights, and the running lights.
  • After the safety chains are hooked, to avoid any droop that might cause the chains to catch, can you cross them?
  • When hitched, make sure the trailer sits level.
  • Is the ball properly sized to fit your trailer?
  • Make sure the breaks are adjusted for your load weight and are working properly.
  • Check the listed tire pressure poundage and inflate tires accordingly.
  • Tires – no belts showing, worn treads, bulges, or cuts.
  • Make sure pins, hinges, and latches are tight and snug.

Each Time You Take Your Trailer Out

  • Check all chains, tire pressure, directionals, running lights, brakes, and the electrical system.
  • Is the ball tight?
  • is all cargo firmly anchored in place?
  • Are the bolts showing any signs of wear, and is the hitch free of cracks?
